What it is

La Ausencia (Absence, 2021) is an immersive dance film in stereoscopic 360° virtual reality with higher-order ambisonic sound (Ambix). It came out of a poetic, choreographic and sensory proposal to explore weight, falling and gravity in the void of memory-space:

«Every absence weighs and falls with a particular grace, carrying our time down into the depths. A poetic, choreographic and sensory proposal to explore weight in the void of memory-space.»

Developed within the research-creation project Los Mayúsculos and the RECLAB research group (Semillero RECLAB) of the School of Arts at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, the piece brought together faculty and artists from the departments of Performing Arts, Music Studies and Visual Arts.

Role and process

David Andrés Vega Monsalve supported the three-dimensional development, the creation of textures, the team’s technical training and the production design within the RECLAB research group:

  1. Texture creation (sea and sequences): Technical and artistic support in creating the textures of the sea environment and of different parts of the video, defining finishes and the visual response of the materials.
  2. Model feedback and seminars on 3D logic: Ongoing feedback on the three-dimensional model, its proportions and spatial behavior. Leading seminars and training sessions with members of the RECLAB research group in regular meetings throughout the development of the work, so they could take in and apply 3D logic and spatial workflows.
  3. 3D lines, Maya and Motion Capture: All the 3D lines, spatial animations and three-dimensional elements were made with Autodesk Maya and Motion Capture (with performers), carrying the choreographic record into the immersive 360° sphere.
  4. 2D animation and production design: Support in 2D animation and technical integration with the RECLAB research group to coordinate graphics, digital compositing and Ricardo Escallón’s ambisonic audio.
